Students from Radiant Life College recently had the opportunity to step out of the classroom and into their tropical surroundings, taking part in an immersive environmental education experience supported by the Great Barrier Reef Foundation.
The program explored the critical role of carbon and mangrove ecosystems, connecting students with leading experts including the Goondoi Rangers, Earthwatch Institute Australia’s Jock Mackenzie, and mangrove expert Professor Norman Duke.
Their guidance offered students unique, first-hand insights into the science behind coastal protection, carbon storage, and ecosystem restoration.
Radiant Life Principal Nathanael Edwards said the day was a valuable exploration of real-world applications of STEM.
“These types of immersive experiences bring STEM to life for our students, connecting science, technology, engineering, and maths to real-world challenges like climate action, coastal resilience, and ecosystem restoration,” he said.
This was an immersive experience for Radiant Life College students, with Indigenous perspectives, working with First Nations Rangers and key conservation organisations in the preservation of their environment.
Mr Edwards praised the Great Barrier Reef Foundation’s initiative, working with First Nations organisations in caring for country and water quality.
“The Great Barrier Reef Foundation’s engagement with the local Rangers has allowed for our students to access this great opportunity.”
“We are grateful to Jock Mackenzie from Earthwatch, Professor Duke, and all involved for engaging with our students so thoughtfully and sharing their knowledge.”
Radiant Life College is proud to provide opportunities that inspire the next generation of scientists, rangers, and reef defenders; future leaders who will help protect and restore Australia’s unique natural environment.
